I have been wanting to do this project for a while now, and when I saw this week's challenge of Natural Elements, I knew this was the perfect project for me to do.
I started off by finding this jewel of a piece of wood in a pile that my husband was going to use for firewood.  At first I thought of cutting the bottom edge to make it even, but then decided against it.  I took a cloth and brush and dusted off all the dirt that was on the wood.
Next thing I did was to gather some paints, brushes, and glue.  I knew I wouldn't use all the paints I chose, but this saved me a trip back to my closet to look through the drawer of paints I have.
Not finding my paint pallet, I chose to use a paper plate.  I put a couple napkins under the plate, as well as a coupe plate holders, just in case it leaked through.  I also got a cup of water for my brushes.
I used the brown paint first, and made a tree trunk, then used evergreen paint to make some lines for branches.
I have a bag full of wood snowmen, snowflakes, etc, so found the snowman I wanted to use, as well as two small, and one big snowflake.   I painted each of them white.
For the small detail on the snowman, I used a black and an orange Sharpie that had an ultra fine point on them.
I made the face and buttons with the Sharpies.
Next thing I did was to paint some snow on the tree.  This was the first time I have painted a tree, much less painting snow on it, so forgive me if it isn't the best.
I then grabbed my Franklin Hide Glue, and put a little bit on the backs of the snowman and snowflakes, and glued them to the wood.
Here is my finished project.  The tree could have been filled in a little better, but all and all, not too bad for my first time.

What's your question? If I wanted to put it outside, would spray on varnish or polyerathine work?
