Direct Composting - Improving Garden Soil

We just planted our garden and continued our direct composting. It's super easy and comes highly recommended as a no muss no fuss way to improve your garden soil. It's much easier than using a compost bin.

I have a quick video to show you my trench between tomato plant rows. All you need is a shovel, kitchen scraps and some elbow grease. To give you a look-see into our garden planning, I have a quick video for you of our little garden. If a picture is worth a thousand words, what is a video worth? :)

We planted carrots, corn, zucchini, lettuce, peppers, cucumbers and peas. Our rhubarb came up again...whew! Outside the garden up against the fence, we're trying out squash. They like to take over so we kicked them out this year. I'll be adding herbs and flowers to help control pests.
Don't try to have a perfect garden - set it up how you like it best and do research on what works in your area. We have a very short growing season, so I have to start many of my vegis indoors 6-8 weeks ahead. We can't even plant until after Memorial Day, so we have to get very creative!

This year I left a 3 foot path between tomato plants so make weeding and harvesting easier. Some days you just have to do what works best rather than saving space or squeezing in so much that it become difficult down the road.

This fall we are going to try mulching to avoid tilling. Tilling is such a pain! Tell me about your garden - what are you planting this year?

We keep our garden small plant a little of each thing we feel will produce between that and any overflow from family and others gardener we have

Plenty to can with still an overflow
    • I just started canning a couple of years ago too and love the vegis year 'round. It's nice knowing they are chemical free. Being in Virginia, you have a good long growing season...I bet you love that!
