Barn Door FuN!

I don't think there is a new trend I like more than the use of the barn door in modern decor today. A new door is one thing to incorporate into the look, but ~ finding a beautiful old door is serious icing on the cake. Our barn door came into fruition because we waited for 2 months to get a call back from our original kitchen cabinet company ~that never came. This was plan B and it turned out to be an A in my book. When we looked into this contraption, there were none available at that time in the Box Stores. We actually purchased our rail from the local barn door manufacturer and cut it to size. Our next issue was finding the hardware to fit and attach to the door. Hint: if you wait long enough, the Box Stores will catch up with the trend! We were able to buy the wheels and hinges we needed at and they now carry the complete kit. In our remodel coming up in the next couple months, I am planning on adding at least 2 more for their beauty and charm!
This was the opening to our new utility closet that was awaiting the cabinetry front that never showed up.....
In the above picture, you can see the barn rail that we spray painted black to attach the door - with the hinges that we found at Lowes - as well as the wheel mechanism. We found this heavy 8 foot door at our Habitat Retail Store for $100!
All of the above iron pieces came on the door. I only had to sand some edges and a few other areas to distress it just a bit. The piece we used as the door handle was a decoration at the top of the door that needed to be removed in order to attach the pulleys to the door. My husband added some spacers to it to create and new handle - it worked perfectly.
I apologize right now for not being able to get a front on shot of this door. It is in the entry to our kitchen - which is also a hallway - and the door is 8 feet tall! Hoping you get the idea? There are more pictures on my blog and another barn door posting that we did our friends beach house coming up tomorrow :) Thank you for stopping by. I love the door but have no place to hang one that move side to side....I was looking at the possibility of adding thin strips of wood and some new hardware and just making over one of my slab door. Thanks for the idea.
