I came into possession of a vintage Haywood Wakefield side table. The only problem was it had a huge water mark on it. My job was to get rid of the spot and restore this piece.
Here's the table. This side table was in excellent shape besides for there were some small scuffs here and there.
Here was the problem. A huge water stain. So I had to get to work. The first thing I did was sand the piece with 80 grid sandpaper. Then I poured some household bleach on the spot and let it sit. I wiped it off and repeated until it was lighter. It took 3 application of 5 min each. Then I sanded with 120 grit paper. I applied the polyurethane and voila.
Here is the table all done. You can barely see the spot. I am thrilled with the outcome!
And another picture from overhead. The other table is pictured here and that didn't have a stain. It was treated the same minus the bleach.
Suggested materials:
  • Bleach   (walmart)
  • Minwax polyurethane clear semi-gloss   (home depot)
