I decided to try this week's challenge, to furnish the outside area.
I remembered I had a table I had wanted to mosaic years ago, but didn't get around to it. I found this and other metal items that had gone rusty behind the shed.
I also had been saving my husband's beer caps for years( he doesn't drink much, so this has took some time)

Table base
So the first thing I had to do was take a file and some wire wool and removed all the loose rust.
One of the pot planters
After I had rubbed them down, I wiped the dust from them with a damp cloth.
I then took a black spray can and gave each piece two fine coats.
My husband cut some wood to fit the table.
I then sealed around the wood with a waterproof sealant.
The top of the table I placed the old beer caps on the table, first doing around the edge, then randomly in the middle. These were stuck on with a gripper adhesive.
I thought it needed something else so I added some glass pebbles.
I then got some waterproof tile grout and filled the gaps. This was very messy. I left it to dry a little, then wiped some of it off, left it a little more, went back to finish and found some little birds had left me a present, so I had to scrape some off and refilled. I left it outside to dry.
The next day I found that some of the beer caps had bled with rust, so more scraping and filling.
Then I wiped each cap and pebbles clean with a damp cloth.
Finally when dried, I spray varnished it with three coats.
I really like how it looks, but if I was doing another, I would varnish the beer caps first, because the rust was annoying and on a couple of caps when wiping clean the print came off too, I'll also dry it undercover.
The cost would be about £16.00, if you had to buy everything, but I had most of the paint and sealants etc, except the grout so I only paid out £5.00.

I potted the planters, arranged a black Bamboo as a back drop, planted pansy's and used a black display stand. I had chairs that had black metal arms and legs. I think everything came together
Just in time for the sun.
Finished table and planters
Follow up: As much as I loved this project, the caps sadly caused the table to rust. I have decided to create a new version! http://www.hometalk.com/diy/bedroom/furniture...>

LOVE IT! Thanks so much for the idea- can't wait to try it! Also saw this cute idea for a bottle cap checkerboard. Just collect two types of caps for the checkers and find a game board. :D
