Such a great surprise! I peeked under my bedroom carpet...and it's plywood. LOL

You may be the lucky one in the long run.Take the comment from the one about how bad their floor squeaked, thats most likely becausethe flooring was installed directly to the floor 'sleepers'or floor joists.this was a money saving measure for builders of older homes.Instead of first putting down a good sub floor foundation then installing the hardwood floor like it should be done, they thought they could skip the subfloor. The trouble is,air comes through the cracks/gaps.The floor squeaks constantly, and you don't have that extra layer of the good solid wood insulation.Shortcuts rarely pay off in the long run.In your situation, you have the subfloor,so whatever you choose to put down going forward will only be a plus(unless it's more plywood).

Frequently asked questions
Have a question about this project?
We have hard wood floors though out our house but when we took up the carpet to recarpet the floors were so squeaky we tried baby powder but it didn’t work would we have to pull up all the old wood if we put down new?
Oh my gosh you were lucky!! When we did it when I was a teen to my stepdads parents home the finish was awful and we had to go through 3 layers of carpet, 4 layers of Lino with newspaper as padding (what?! I know!) and we found random coins in between layers! How?! Was it on purpose?? We had to ‘head’ all the nails, sand back and stain & polish! Look at that finish just waiting for you!
