Boy, am I ever glad when my neighbour called me up with the grand news she had a bunch of old wood to get rid of. I was clamoring down the road in minutes!

And what did I discover under an old tarp? An entire bundle of chippy wood picket fence planks! So I brought them ALL home... you know... just in case.

I'm just so glad I had those pickets on hand this fall, because they helped theme this adorable unique fall project to a white chippy T!

Wait until you see what these pickets became...

Wood used

These old picket wood fence planks are GOLD! Their chippy goodness was retained as I pressure washed them gently, which had them ready for this project...

Designing the shelf

3 of the planks were cut to the desired length, with one extra plank positioned as a shelf near the bottom.

Assembling the sign

The boards were all joined using a Kreg Jig pocket hole maker.

How to assemble with a Kreg Jig:

A Kreg Jig is a tool that creates pocket holes to help join wood easier with super pro looking results! It's very easy to use!

The tool positions the wood in such a way that helps to create a drilled hole on a sharp angle. Then you position the wood into place, screw it together through the hole and your join is complete!

Learn how to use a Kreg Jig from THIS POST, which includes a helpful video!

How to assemble without a jig:

You can also assemble this shelf using wood board supports across the back of the shelf, and use some kind of brackets under the shelf to hold it in place.

Adding twine supports

Twine supports were added to help for more shelf support as well as help theme this project.

Masking tape was wrapped around the twine ends for easier threading through the drilled holes.

The tops of the twine were tied to little brackets that were screwed onto the boards. See that further below!

Adding a fall stencil

Next up was choosing a stencil design to use!

This Sunflower Farm - small stencil from HERE was the perfect candidate for this picket project!

How to stencil

Various shades of Fusion Mineral Paint and some acrylic craft paint were used to stencil on the cutest Sunflower Farm sign!

The key to super sharp stencil images is to ensure your stencil brush feels dry. Here's how:

How to stencil:

  1. Dip stencil brush into paint.
  2. Remove most paint onto a rag to create a dry-brush.
  3. Tap or swirl paint through the stencil for the desired effect.

It looked so cute! But one more thing was added to make this project extra unique...

Adding rusty junk for a 3D effect

A rusty old spigot tap handle was screwed in the middle of the sunflower to create a cool 3D effect!

Talk about the perfect colour and size, huh?

So let's hang this cutie up so you can see this project complete!

The finished sign shelf!

And there you have the cutest little Sunflower Farm sign with shelf in the land!

The shelf is so perfect to place fall foliage freshly picked from your yard!

And of course, the Sunflower Farm sign screams fall in all the best ways.

All around, this is a super simple project with such great fall impact!
