Clever Garden Edging Ideas

Instead of saying "good fences make good neighbors", let's say "good edging makes good gardens." Edging doesn't have to be expensive. You can use many recycled or found objects to make interesting, beautiful and effective garden borders and edgings.
The edging above uses large rocks gathered from around the woods on my farm. Rocks larger than a softball were gathered, placed in a shallow trench, and cemented together to form the edging. Phlox loves to spill over it, as you can see from the picture above!
Borders around garden sections help confine and define the space. You can make borders from many different objects. Another section of my garden, above, shows more jagged rocks placed around the roses. I also planted a natural border of lavender around the roses. You can make a border out of plants just as you would from stones, wood or other objects.
These capstones came from an area on our back deck that we were remodeling. Instead of just discarding them, I placed them on the ground as an edging for the flowers. You can find bricks or stones discarded at construction sites; always ASK if you can take them if you'd like to use them as recycled edging.
I took this photograph at the Evergreen Lavender Farm in Pamplin, Virginia during an event. The owners used fun and funky dinner plates set in a trench to create a whimsical border around their flower beds. With so many yard sale and thrift store dishes available for pennies, you can create your own unique border with a similar arrangement.
