Seashore Key and Cap Caddy

On a trip to the Gulf of Mexico, I bought several seashell necklaces and other souvenirs. They kept getting tangled in my store bags. I didn’t know how to show off the souvenirs without cluttering the house. A trip to a local Goodwill Store started the process.

The small cabinet I found at Goodwill for $2.99 had been painted a time or two before I got it. The white chalk paint over a blue base, then distressed, was pretty in itself, but but I wanted something more reflective of the beautiful blue green water outside our balcony.

I started with a lovely shade of blue-green, diluted, from a latex paint from Walmart, at 50 cents. I used a sponge brush to keep the paint fluid and soft. The cup hooks down the sides, the small hangers on the back, and the knobs on the bottom were already attached.

After two fast drying coats, I had the base I wanted. I bought a soft green cloth napkin at Goodwill for 79 cents for a soft backing, but I wanted to bring out more of the green. I used the yellow green out of a kid’s watercolor paint set, cost one cent!

I used a paper towel to rub on the lime green paint wherever I wanted it. All the facing edges and on top of some shelves and the sides and top got some green. I used a kid’s paintbrush to feather and speckle different parts. Time for the background!

I cut the napkin to size, then hot glued it to the back of the cabinet. I turned under the raw cut edges, and the other two sides were hemmed, and the hot glue held firmly. I assume this will hang on a wall, so the sun won’t shine through the backing, but I like the way the light glows.

With my husband to model, I decorated the cabinet with some of my treasures. The knobs at the bottom can hold sports caps. I hung three necklaces made of seashells on the cup hooks on the sides. A wobbly sea turtle (who nest locally), a sand dollar, and a metal and jewel turquoise fish show some possibilities, but I love the starfish I found in a souvenir store. I hope you see something you like and which inspires you.
