September is almost here and that means time for holiday crafts. Halloween is a crafter’s dream because of the endless possibilities of things to create. This is one of those possibilities.

Thrift Store Find

This wooden compartment box caught my eye at a thrift store. When I saw the 25 cent sticker, there was no doubt that it was going to my house.

Initial Preparation

One of my favorite projects from last Halloween was a shadow box made from a cutlery tray. (See link at bottom of page.)

This mini compartment box was perfect for a quick project. Box was painted with Annie Sloan Graphite with a light brushing of Barcelona Orange in the seams and edges. Annie Sloan Soft Wax completed the box preparation.

Library Book Sale

I never pass up a book sale as a source for fun paper craft supplies. In this case, a child’s Halloween book provided the ideal pictures to use as backgrounds in each of the 3 sections.

Begin with the Bones

A Dollar Tree skeleton was a perfect fit in the vertical section with the graveyard background and a tombstone that said “Here lies R.U. Well”. A miniature frog from my stash found a new home gazing at Mr. Skeleton.

Pumpkins & Light

Two little pumpkins made from air clay and a black battery light wrapped in paper from Halloween book were added to bottom shelf.

Finishing Box

Since I recently discovered the joy of needle felting, I made a small ghost holding a glass bead which I glued to the back of the box at the top.

Miniature potion & spell book labels were pasted to small wood blocks and glued to bottom of that compartment. “BOO” from Scrabble letters were glued above blocks.

A small vanilla extract bottle had a Toad Bladders label added, together with a plastic bat ring. A metal moon finished the compartment.

Display Stand

Originally I was going to add a hanger on the back and place on the wall but decided to make it a table display. A block of wood painted in Annie Sloan Graphite & Barcelona Orange, a broken finial and a spacer piece were transformed into a stand.

The Final Result

As a one-of-a-kind Halloween decoration, not only was it fun to make, it will be a centerpiece for my hallway table. Happy Haunting!
