Whenever we would sit on our finished patio, all we could see was the eye-sore of our under deck. We didn’t like the look of traditional lattice but decided we needed to do something. We came across the idea to use wood slats and fell in love! This was an easy project that made a big impact on our outdoor space.

What you’ll need:

Pressure treated 1x6s

Pressure treated 2x4s

Deck screws

Step 1: Install supports

First we used the 2x4s to install supports under the deck. We attached one every 6 ft or so, using 3 inch decking screws.

Step 2: Install 1x6s

Next we cut and installed our 1x6s onto the supports using 2 inch decking screws. We started from the top down and left no space between the boards, but this is where you can get creative! You can use different wood thicknesses, and different spacing to create a unique look.

Step 3: Add corner details

Finally, we added some vertical pieces onto the corners to cover up the rough edges. This gave it a more finished look.

This fixed our problem of the ugly under deck, and really completed the look of our outdoor space. It was such an easy project and made such a big impact.

Suggested materials:
  • 1x6   (2x4)
  • Deck screws
